    Soccer Girl 3"

I see my first custom, Soccer Girl, just got posted on the customs page. I made it for a cake decoration. I thought the base figure would lend itself as a soccer player headbutting a ball. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it! I love collecting Vinylmation, but now I can see myself getting hooked on making customs. I love the work posted on this site - very inspirational!

Wow! Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoy my first time out! I just took a picture of my custom on the birthday cake, and it got a great response. Except for the birthday girl (who collects Vinylmation), no one else knew what Vinylmation was, so it was quite the conversation piece. I'm not sure how to post images in forum posts, but if someone tells me how, I can post a pic of it.

As for my technique for a smooth finish, I enjoy painting Games Workshop's Warhammer 40K miniatures. For anyone not familiar with these, go to www.games-workshop.com. Basically, Warhammer is a tabletop strategy game that uses custom painted models. The models are very small, and the company has developed some great acrylic paints and paint techniques to paint them with. For my custom Vinylmation, I sprayed it first with their white acrylic primer. I then used their foundation series of paints to add the details. These paints go on smoothly with very few visible brush strokes. They are very easy to work with and are very durable once dry. I did not coat the figure with any matte or gloss finish after I was done, but they do offer such sprays.

I just saw in the "What's to Come #6" in the news section of this site that Disney is releasing a sports series. I'm interested if they do a soccer one as well.

Vinylmation is a great hobby. I enjoy pin trading, but Vinylmation allows you to not only collect pieces, but also create your own.

I find the little jars go a long way. The thing to remember is to use a ceramic tile or plate. I then use the back (non-bristle) end of the brush to dab some paint onto the tile. After this, I clean the brush and use the same end of the brush to add 2 to 3 drops of water to the paint and mix it. This allows it to apply evenly to the surface of the figure. Continue to add water to keep the paint wet as you use it. If you let the paint dry too much on the tile, it will go on thick on the figure and you will end up with thick brush strokes. It will take a little practice to get the feel of it. Be sure to use the primer spray first and you won't have problems with the paint chipping off. I hope this helps.

Wahses help with chipping too! They provide a good sealant if you get a good brand.

Thanks again for all the kind words!

bamsk8er, one more thing to remember if you use those paints is that the white acrylic paint from jars does not apply smoothly to figures, even when you add a drop of water. For areas that need to be white, the best thing is to leave the white base spray. In other words, don't paint over the areas that you want white. For my figure, I left the base spray for the ball, the eyes, and the "10" on the jersey and painted around them.
